Project-Based Learning Outline
1. Overview of Project
· PBL Methodology
· Examples of past projects
2. One class period introductory exercise
Example: design a tool to help an artist who has MS hold a pencil or brush)- see http://steamcurriculum.weebly.com/arthritic-pencil-holder.html or https://makecode.microbit.org/projects/watch
Deliverables: Sketch; 'low-res' prototype; 1-minute group presentation; individual reflection
3. Open-ended design prompt/essential question/purpose- for example
· How can I make an interactive game?
· How can we make a musical instrument?
· See Nu-Vu Studios( https://cambridge.nuvustudio.com/discover )- design prompts should be constrained enough to be manageable, yet open-ended enough to encourage a multiplicity of solutions
4. User interviews/research- see Design Thinking methodology- human-centered design
· Deliverables: user interviews
5. Find precedents- How has this problem been solved in the past?
· Deliverables: Individual journal entries documenting research into precedents; collect images
6. Brainstorm possible ideas
· Deliverables: Three Ideas presentation( 2 minutes per group, 40 seconds per idea); sketches of each idea
7. Pick one( or do additional Sketch Model Reviews/MockUp Reviews)
· Deliverable: Reflection on reasoning for your choice
· Identify an outside expert or consultant
· Identify skills you will need to learn- i.e., SketchUp; MicroBit
8. Sketch Model/Paper Prototype of Design
· Deliverable: 'Low-Res' Paper Prototype/Storyboard; journal entry with photo
· Order materials
9. Fabrication/Iteration
· Do 2 or three iterations of design
· Roadblocks: Identify roadblocks to fabrication- tools/materials/expertise/
· Deliverables:
o design iterations;
o 1 minute daily presentations/check-ins
o individual journal entries with reflections and photos.
o Technical Review by classmates/experts/teacher
10. Presentation of Learning/Exhibition includes live portion + video, blogs, etc. +
